Why is it worth investing in a green city?

Public space is constantly being improved to serve the local society as efficiently as possible.

The changes include not only road construction or new facilities, but also modernization of the existing ones to meet current legal and functional requirements. Cities are increasingly seeing the need to organize greenery to provide residents with adequate places to relax and to create a space attractive to tourists.

The fact that greenery is an essential element in cities is a fact. Plants produce oxygen, provide shelter for animals, and improve well-being and calm down. Remembering the recent heat, we can add that they create a shadow in the concrete jungle. Unfortunately, the green lungs of cities are not eternal; some trees should be removed due to age, disease or location, since they may pose a threat to people (e.g. an old and weak tree next to a parking lot). Recognizing the need for investment in green areas, cities organize various types of events that combine promotion of a particular place with space change.

What are BUGA and IGA?

One of the practices for supporting greenery in the city is BUGA - a gardening festival taking place in Germany. The festival venue changes every two years, modern show gardens are being created in selected areas. This is a great attraction for tourists, who come to the event on a massive scale to see something new, as well as for enthusiasts, who can learn about interesting space planning solutions. Most frequently chosen areas are unattractive ones; thanks to the exhibition they gain new looks - they become an oasis of rest and a place for creative leisure.

IGA is another noteworthy event that also takes place abroad. This is a gardening exhibition organized every 10 years. The last took place in 2017 in Berlin, and the gardens were modelled on arrangements from Japan, Italy and China. There were also thematically designed areas, e.g. the visitors could walk around the English, rose or Renaissance gardens.

Exhibitions are not all

During these two events, in addition to learning about gardening trends, guests could take part in concerts, shows, performances and even competitions. Huge numbers of tourists from various corners of the world visited the exhibitions, and most importantly - uninteresting areas, changed into an attractive space that stayed with the inhabitants afterwards. Investment in this type of event is a long-term project, positively affecting the image of the city and the perception of it by both tourists and locals.
